Underwater acoustic communications: potential and applications

with Paolo Casari and Emanuele Rocco

In this session, Prof. Casari will introduce the peculiarities of underwater acoustic communications, and describe some applications, including networked communications, as well as active and passive localization.
Dr. Emanuele Rocco, will then explain how the Witted company (located in Rovereto, Italy) is planning to exploit acoustic communication technologies for wireless localization and communication applications, using intelligent underwater drones and autonomous surface boats.

Speakers

Paolo Casari is assistant professor at the University of Trento. His research focuses on wireless communications and networks, including underwater acoustic networks, next-generation millimeter-wave networks, and networks in challenged environments. He received two best paper awards, and is associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and for the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.

Emanuele Rocco, Ph.D. in Physics and Newton fellow alumni of the Royal Society, UK, is the Chief Technical and Scientific Officer of Witted Srl, a green tech company focused on biodiversity monitoring and preservation. His work focuses on exploring and deploying together novel technologies as sea robotics, IoT sensors, space observation and embedded artificial intelligence in autonomous solutions looking after protected alpine and marine habitats.
